British era pillar recovered in Pirojpur
Police recovered a border pillar dated back to the British period and arrested five people for their connection in selling it illegally in Nesarabad upzila of Pirojpur yesterday.
The pillar weighing around 15 kilogrammes was recovered from a house owned by one Jamal Hossain at Patikelbari village in the upazila, our Pirojpur correspondent reports quoting police.
A case was filed today with Nesarabad Police Station in this regard.
The metallic object -- 32 inches in length and 23 inches in diameter -- bears labels EASTINDIA CO in the middle, 1331 on the left side and 1818 on the right, police said in the case statement.
The arrestees are: MahbubAlam, 46, from Kotalipara in Gopalganj, Ekhlasur Rahman, 25, and Jahidul Islam, 23, from Nazirpur upazila, Rashed Khan, 48, from Pirojpur Sadar upazila and Jamal Fakir from Nesarabad upazila of the district.
Acting on a tip off, a police team made the recovery and the arrest in a drive near a bridge at 11:45pm in the area.
In a primary interrogation, the arrestees told police that they gathered in the area to sell the pillar at an advance payment of Tk 10,000, police said in the case statement.
The arrestees tried to deceive people in the name of showing a so-called valuable border pillar, it said.
