Gulshan office raid an ‘attack on democracy’: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that raid at party chairperson Khaleda Zia's office is “tantamount to attack on democracy”.
"It is not a raid. It is an attack on democracy. When BNP is working to change the political culture, such attack, in the meantime, is an alarming sign for democracy," he said.
He came up with the statement while addressing a view exchanging meeting with the newly elected committee of Dhaka city (South) BNP at a hotel in the city.
In a surprise move, police raided the office on May 20 to seize "materials for carrying out anti-state and subversive activities". They found nothing during the more than two-hour-long search.
The raid was conducted following a "mysterious" general diary (GD) filed with Gulshan Police Station on Friday. Police did not disclose the identity of the person who filed the diary.
