Company discovers novel idea to sell more products on Women’s Day
The following conversation is part of the meeting minutes of an organisation that sells consumer goods. The meeting was held before Women's Day to discuss business strategies for the occasion.
Boss: Alright, guys, it's that time of the year again. We, as a company, have to show that we respect women more than every other organisation. And hence, this meeting. Pitch your best women-respecting ideas.
Sajid: Boss, how about we give them a gift hamper like every year? That'll make them feel valued momentarily, and it's not going to cost much because our 100-employee company only has three women.
Boss: You pitch the same idea every single year... And I love it every time, brilliant. We're going to implement it this year too, unless anyone has better ideas.
Rafsan: Sir, with all due respect, while the idea is great it will not bring us money. I propose we launch an ad campaign to really show everyone who the real women-respecters are. Not only will people think we are the torchbearers of ethics, but they will also buy our products.
Boss: Excellent. Sajid, get out. So, what ad are we making?
Rafsan: I have three years of experience interacting with five women. I think what they want is more burden of responsibility? Like they want to work work work work work. So, what if we show women who suffer through hell just to show that they're worthy of basic decency?
Boss: Ambitious. Okay, we'll prepare a huge budget for this. Select girls who look like they're successful enough to make it believable, and pretty enough so we can sell our cosmetics.
"I propose we launch an ad campaign to really show everyone who the real women-respecters are. Not only will people think we are the torchbearers of ethics, but they will also buy our products."
Gazi: Boss, how about we use that budget to start gender-sensitivity training at our workplace.
Boss: Why would we do that? We only have three women here. You're fired.
Shabab: Sir, how about we discount our female products for one day, so that they cost the same as men's ones? That'll truly emphasise the concept of equality.
Boss: I want everyone to applaud Shabab for coming up with such an impactful idea. This will truly revolutionise the marketing industry, and women's lives, I guess. Shabab, next month we'll give you a "Best Changemaker for Women" award.
Gazi (fired): Boss, how about we build a daycare to help working women, which will increase productivity and hence profits?
Boss: You just don't understand women, Gazi. Nice try but you're still unemployed.
