SAARC officials meet to set agenda for bringing down tariffs

KATHMANDU, July 30 : The main South Asian regional group on Tuesday took new steps toward eliminating tariffs to boost trade in the region, reports AFP. Senior officials from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries began a three-day meeting here to set an agenda for bringing down tariffs. The inter-governmental group on trade liberalisation will make recommendations to the governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka on how to free up trade. Ferry services at Aricha ghat suspended again

Ferry services at Aricha ghat has been suspended again since 9:30 pm yesterday because of dense fog, leaving more than 1800 vehicles stranded at the ghat.

Earlier, ferry services resumed at 10 in the morning after remaining suspended for over 13 hours. Ferry services in Maowa-Bhanga and Bhuapur-Sirajganj routes also remained suspended, sources said.

"Thick fog has disrupted movement of the vessels. So, we have decided to postpone ferry services in Aricha-Natakhola and Aricha-Daulatdia routes," a BIWTC high official told The Daily Star.

Transport strike in Sylhet

SYLHET, Jan 5: Plying of bus and minibus will be suspended from Monday in the Sylhet-Sunamganj road as Sylhet Bus-Minibus Owners group went on a sudden strike on Sunday afternoon and the Transport Workers Association of Sunamganj district has called the strike from next morning.

Agitated workers damaged at least five mini-buses and fell five others into the roadside ditch on different places along the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway during the last two days as sequel to a longstanding dispute between the Sunamganj Bus-Minibus Owners Association and Sylhet Bus Owners group.
