HC to stop parading detainees before media
The law enforcers' placing detainees before the media and making them speak should be stopped, observed a High Court bench on December 5. Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, senior judge of a division bench, also said that such actions were prohibited as per law and the constitution. The law enforcers take confessional statements from the detainees while exposing their names and identities before the media, which is illegal and unconstitutional, he said during the hearing of a contempt of court case. Justice Manik made the comment following the December 1 incident of producing Javed Imam, a senior assistant judge of Bhola District Judge's Court, before the media by the police after arresting him in front of the capital's Eden Women's College for allegedly carrying 342 bottles of Phensedyl. -The Daily Star December 6 2012.
HC scraps case against MK Alamgir
The High Court on December 5 quashed a corruption case against Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir. The erstwhile Bureau of Anti-Corruption on May 13, 2002, had filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on charge of attempted misappropriation of public money worth Tk 81.60 crore when he was the state minister for planning in 2000-2001. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Farid Ahmed handed down the verdict after hearing a petition filed by the home minister for quashing the proceedings in the case. In October, 2002, the HC had stayed the proceedings in the case and also issued a rule upon the government to explain why the case proceedings should not be quashed. -The Daily Star December 6 2012.
HC to mark river Dwaki as ecologically critical
The High Court on December 5 directed the government to declare river Dwaki at Jaflong in Sylhet as an ecologically critical area within a month to protect its ecosystem. The court also directed the authorities concerned to remove a bridge, constructed over the river for carrying quarried stones, and its approach road within 15 days. The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo came up with the verdict after hearing a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association (Bela). The petition, filed in December last year, said some stone businessmen constructed the bridge over the river for shifting quarried stones without taking permission from the government and assessing environmental impacts. The bridge and its adjacent road were damaging the ecology in the area, it said. Bela requested the court to remove the bridge and the road to protect the ecosystem of river Dwaki and the livelihoods of the people living adjacent to it. - The Daily Star December 6 2012.
Music director Emon arrested
Police arrested music director Shawkot Ali Emon on December 5 after a 25-year-old female singer filed a case accusing him of luring her with false promises of marriage to get physically involved. Police, during a raid at Shawkot's Eskaton Gardens flat in the capital's Ramna, also seized nine Yaba tablets and a few bottles of contraband liquor. The singer filed the case with Ramna Police Station on December 4 under the women and children repression prevention Act. In her case statement, the singer said she and Shawkot were living together in the flat for the last one and a half years following the false promises. A few days ago he declined to keep his promises and threw her out, she said. Police said Shawkot admitted the allegations in preliminary interrogation. - The Daily Star December 6 2012.
Tazreen's 3 officials denied bail
A Dhaka court on December 4 rejected bail petitions of three officials of fire-devastated Tazreen Fashion Ltd and ordered sending them to jail. The accused officials are Administrative Officer Dulal uddin, Store-in-Charge Hamidul Islam Lablu, and Security Supervisor Mohammad Al Amin. Senior Judicial Magistrate Washim Sheikh passed the order after Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station and investigation officer of the case, produced them before it on completion of their five-day remand. In the forwarding report placed before the court on December 4, Mostafa said he gathered important information from the three people. The information derived from the three was being verified, he said. He said he appealed to the court to detain them in jail until the investigation completes. Earlier on November 28, the IO said all the garment workers were controlled by the three accused. - The Daily Star December 5 2012.
Jamaat leader sued for threatening PM's life
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Mujibur Rahman was sued on December 3 for "threatening to kill" Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. AB Siddiqui, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, an associate body of AL, filed the case against Mujibur with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka. After hearing on the case, Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-ur-Rashid recorded the complainant's statement and ordered officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station to investigate the matter.Mujibur Rahman at a rally of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in front of its Naya Paltan central office on November 28 said Hasina had come to power through the path of a caretaker government. If she now trashes it, her life might come to an end, Siddiqui said in his complaint. - The Daily Star December 5 2012.
