Indian singer KK dies after feeling unwell at Kolkata concert

Noted Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, passed away on Tuesday night after falling ill while performing at a concert in Kolkata.

He was 53.

KK, who performed in two concerts over the last two days, reportedly felt unwell during the concert at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata for Gurudas College's fest and returned to the hotel where he reportedly fell down the stairs and his condition worsened.

He was taken to Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) hospital in south Kolkata where doctors declared him "brought dead", reports our New Delhi correspondent citing hospital officials.

"It's unfortunate that we could not treat him," a senior official of the hospital said.

KK's wife and two sons will fly into Kolkata Wednesday morning.

Since the release of his debut album "Pal" in 1999, KK went on to sing numerous hit songs such as "Yaaron", which went on to become major hits among the youth in the late 1990s.

He also lent his voice as a playback singer to many popular songs in Bollywood films, including "Tu hi meri shab hain", "Ankhon mein teri", "Zara sa", "Beete lamhein", "Khuda jaane", "Labon ko", among others.

Noted as a versatile singer, KK has recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bangla.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of KK saying his songs "reflected a wide range of emotions and struck a chord with people of all age groups".

"We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti," Modi tweeted.
