Akram Killing: Teknaf, Ukhia AL leaders to meet Hasina after Eid

Awami League leaders of Teknaf and Ukhia are likely to meet party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after Eid-ul-Fitr to share their concern over the killing of Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque on May 27.

Akram, who was elected councillor thrice, was killed in what Rab claimed was a shootout between the elite force and drug dealers in Cox's Bazar during the ongoing anti-narcotics drive.

At a press conference in Cox's Bazar on May 31, Ayesha Begum, wife of Akram, who was also Teknaf upazila Jubo League president for 13 years, however, alleged that her husband was murdered in cold blood. She gave journalists four unverified audio clips of chilling conversations in support of her claim.

In one of the clips, a female voice is heard continuously screaming over a mobile phone hearing gunshots during a phone call. Ayesha claimed that the female voice was hers and the gunshots were fired at her husband.

The Daily Star could not independently verify the authenticity of the audio clips.

Terming it a planned killing, Ayesha and local AL leaders demanded a judicial probe into the incident, and urged the prime minister to ensure justice for “the killing of one of her dedicated supporters".

The Rab, however, refuted the allegation and said Akram was killed in a “gunfight” during an anti-narcotics raid.

Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Mohammad Ali and Nurul Bashar, president and general secretary of Teknaf upazila AL, said they already sought an appointment with the PM and they were assured of getting a scope for meeting her after Eid.

“We will also request our party chief not to give nomination to existing MP from Cox's Bazar-4 Abdur Rahman Bodi due to his bad image,” he added.

Earlier, the AL high-ups ordered the Teknaf upazila AL not to hold its emergency working committee meeting after Akram's killing.

The local AL leaders were also assured at that time that they could meet the PM.
