A teenager, who was stabbed in Tongi Saturday night, died yesterday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Six others were injured in the attack.

Habib, 17, who was an employee of a local furniture store, may have been killed over something related to drugs, said police.

A gang of between eight and 10 miscreants, mostly masked, attacked the victims in Tongi's Jamai Bazar area around 10:00pm on Saturday with knives, machetes and other sharp weapons, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station.

Two to three miscreants who did not wear masks were teenagers and residents of Jamai Bazar area. They indiscriminately stabbed whoever was there, he added quoting witnesses.

Based on the witnesses' information, Habib's mother Hasina Akhter filed a case with Tongi Police Station yesterday accusing eight named and two unnamed people.

According to the case statement, Habib was attacked by a group of 10 to 12 young men a few days before the Eid-ul-Azha this year. The same group could be behind the murder.

The statement, however, does not mention any reason behind the enmity.

Police detained two teenagers from near Turag river after the incident, said Sub-Inspector Liton Sharif, who is investigating the case.

Among the injured, Hasan, 15, is in a critical state at the DMCH, he said.

The rest of the injured are admitted to Tongi Ahsan Ullah Master Health Complex.
