Kumari Puja is held either on Mahashtami or Mahanabami.

According to Hindu scriptures, Kumari Puja commemorates the killing of Kolasur by Goddess MahaKali. Kolasur had occupied the heaven and the earth. When the helpless deities approached Mahakali for help, she was born again in the form of Durga and killed Kolasur.
