Dhaka New Market fire kills 1, 3 fall sick

A young man died from suffocation and three others fell sick as a fire broke out at a scrap material shop beside the vegetable market in the city’s New Market area early today.

Atiqul Alam Chowdhury, inspector of Fire Service Control Room, told The Daily Star that the fire might have originated from a burning mosquito coil at the shop around 1:42am when the four people were asleep.

On information, two fire-fighting units rushed in and doused the blaze around 2:30am, he added.

The fire fighters rescued the four from the shop and rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Amjad, 25, dead, said Inspector Mojammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp.

Amjad died of suffocation due to the fire, Mojammel added.

Injured Shohag, 15, suffered 32 percent burn injuries, Yeamin, 25, suffered 12 percent burn, and Mehedi, 20, suffered 32 percent burn, Mojammel informed.
