Ericsson employees on indefinite work abstention in Dhaka

Local employees of telecom equipment maker Ericsson in Dhaka went on an indefinite work abstention to press home their demand for getting termination benefit before layoffs.

A group of employees of the multinational company gathered at their office premises in Gulshan around 12:00pm and staged demonstration, Asaduzzaman, joint secretary of LM Ericsson Employees' Union of Bangladesh, told The Daily Star.

“We begin non-stop work abstention from today as the company did not agree to pay the service compensation,” he said.

The company on August 17 decided to sack 100 employees and their last working day will be August 31, he said.

Ericsson Bangladesh terminated 500 employees in the last few years. But none of them received any termination benefit, said leaders of the union. It now employs 276 people in the country.

Earlier, on August 2, they staged demonstration at their office premises confining some of its senior officials for 11 hours to press home their demand. Then, they withdrew their agitation following an assurance from the company authorities.
