Writ challenges legality of vandalism case against 103 BNP men

BNP mayor candidate of Gazipur city corporation election (GCC) Hasan Uddin Sarker today filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the legality of the proceedings of a vandalism case against 103 BNP men.

In the petition, Hasan Uddin prayed to the HC to stay the trial proceedings of the case filed earlier this month and to issue a rule asking the government to explain why the case proceedings should not be declared illegal as it is running without lawful authority.

The HC may hold hearing on the petition next week, Barrister Sanjid Siddique, a lawyer for Hasan Uddin, told The Daily Star.

He said that the case was filed with Tongi Police Station against 103 BNP men on May 7 with a mala fide intention to keep Hasan Uddin Sarker away from the race of GCC election scheduled to be held on June 26 this year.

All the accused of the case were active in electioneering for Hasan Uddin Sarker, he said.

Police have arrested 13 of them, he added.
