A Union Parishad member was gunned down by unknown miscreants in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi this afternoon.

The deceased, Arif Pathan, 45, was a member of Ward No. 7 of Putia Union Parishad in Shibpur, reports our Narsingdi correspondent quoting Khandakar Imam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Police Station.

A group of miscreants riding two motorbikes came at Boroitola and opened fired at Pathan from behind around 12:30pm, the OC said.

They also managed to flee the spot leaving him critically injured, he added.

As the victim sought help, locals rushed him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where attending doctor declared him dead.

Protesting the killing, locals put barricades on six kilometres area from Boroitola and ransacked at least 10 vehicles, suspending transport movement on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

On Information, Amena Begum, superintendent of police in Narsingdi, visited the spot and assured the agitated locals that the perpetrators would be detained immediately.

Following the assurance, the agitated locals vacated the highway around 3:00pm.

Victim’s younger brother, Roman Pathan, told The Daily Star that his brother had a longstanding dispute over electoral race with one Milon Mia, who was defeated by the victim in the local body elections three times earlier.

As part of revenge, Arif Pathan might have been killed by Milon Mia and his associates, he suspected.
