Teachers and students of Dhaka University’s linguistics department today went on a sit-in programme, demanding withdrawal of the honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degree from former Pakistani autocrat ruler Ayub Khan, President Iskandar Mirza and the country’s then premier Khawaja Nazimuddin.

DU had conferred the honorary degree to them before the Liberation War.

They waged the sit-in programme in front of Anti-Corruption Raju Memorial Sculpture at 11am to press home their demands, reports our photo journalist from the spot.

Referring to them as oppressors and enemies of the country, Tuhin Mandal, a participant of the protest, said DU authorities should have withdrawn the honorary degree from them a long time ago for their heinous role during the Liberation War and their oppressive rule when they were in power in undivided Pakistan.

He demanded the DU authorities to withdraw the degree from them immediately.
