Noakhali sadar, Begumganj upazilas declared red zones

The local administration today declared Nohakhali sadar and Begumganj upazilas as red zones and imposed lockdowns there for the next 15 days from tomorrow to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Choumohoni of Begumganj and Maijdee of Noakhali Sadar upazila were identified as hotspots considering the increasing number of infection, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Tanmoy Das made the announcement following a meeting at his office yesterday.

The lockdown will remain effective from June 9 to June 23 in the areas and no one will be allowed to enter or exit the red zones unless an emergency can be proven, he said.

The plying of all public transport in the areas will be halted during the lockdown period, the government official said.

The first coronavirus case was detected in Sonaimuri upazila in the district on April 9 and the number has reached 1,001 within the last eight days from June 6, said the DC.

Noakhali Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mominur Rahman said grocery stores, kitchen markets and medicine shops will remain open in the area every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00am to 12:00noon, maintaining social distance and health guidelines.

Bank and other financial institutes will remain open every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday in line with the directives of the Bangladesh Bank, the civil surgeon said.
