Rohingyas among 4 killed in Cox’s Bazar road crash

Four people including three Rohingya refugees were killed and 10 others injured today as a bamboo-laden truck fell on three human haulers and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rohingya refugees Nur Kayes, 25, Tosrin, 20, and her five-month-old daughter Moshrofa Akhter of Balukhali camp in Ukhia, and Rozina Akter, 26, a resident of Balukhali’s Panbazar area, said Chao Lay Marma, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Ukhia Circle.

According to the ASP, the Teknaf-bound truck leaned to one side and fell on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and three battery-run three-wheelers after one of its tyres got stuck into a big hole on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway near Balukhali Customs Office around 9:00am.

All the deceased were passengers of the CNG-ran auto-rickshaw and the battery-run three-wheelers, the ASP said, adding that police seized the truck, but its driver and helper managed to escape.

The bodies have been handed over to their family members, he added.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at the field hospital run by International Red Crescent Society at Kutupalong.
