In the STAR file photo, garment workers stage a sit-in in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to demand due wages and festival bonuses.

Different garment workers' associations today called upon the factory owners to pay the apparel workers’ salary and Eid allowance before the 20th Ramadan.

The demand came from separate human chain programmes organised by Garments Sramik Oikya Forum, Bangladesh Garments Workers Alliance and Garments Sramik Adhikar Andalon in front of the National Press Club, said a press release.

The apparel workers’ leaders said factory owners must pay the allowance before the 20th Ramadan to avoid any unrest in the sector.

Addressing the programmes, they warned that the government and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association will have to take the responsibility, if the workers’ take to the street to press home their demands.

They also highlighted the remarks of State Minister for Labour and Employment Ministry Mujibul Haque Chunnu in favour of their demands.

On May 22, the junior labour minister said that the owners have to pay the workers’ Eid bonuses by the 21st day of Ramadan.
