Govt allocates Tk 1,000cr to pay jute mills workers

The government today allocated Tk 1,000 crore to buy jute and clear the dues of the workers of state-run jute mills amid an ongoing strike and agitation in Khulna.

After the weekly cabinet meeting, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam told reporters the decision came as per instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Of the amount, Tk 600 crore has been allocated for the due salaries and allowances of the workers.

Workers of state-run jute mills in Khulna have been on strike and agitating since April 4. Their strike has, so far, cost a production deficit of of nearly a thousand metric tonnes which has a market value of Tk 8 crore.
