Two suspected Rohingya criminals were killed in a “gunfight” with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban early today.

Deceased Md Yasin, 30, and Md Hossain, 22, are the members of a gang who shot two members of BGB at Ghumdhum in Naikhyangchhari on November 11, said Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, commanding officer (CO) of BGB 34 battalion.

The “gunfight” took place in Tumbru Natun Bridge area, reports our Bandarban correspondent quoting the BGB official.

The gang of Rohingyas is involved in spreading terrorism and smuggling drugs, the CO said.

Seeking anonymity, some locals told The Daily Star that Harakah al-Yaqin, a Rohingya insurgent group, was behind the recent attack on the BGB men.

However, the BGB commanding officer said, “We are investigating whether the listed criminals had any link with that insurgent group.”

One gun and two bullets were recovered from their possession, said the official.

The duo were the residents of Kutupalong Camp 1 in Cox’s Bazar.
