33 detained, 134 fined for not wearing masks in Khulna and Munshiganj

Thirty-three people were detained and around 134 people fined by mobile courts for violating Covid-19 health guidelines in Munshiganj and Khulna today.

It was the second day of drives in the areas, aimed at ensuring adherence to health guidelines.

During a five-hour drive -- from 11:00am -- in Munshiganj, two mobile courts fined 70 people Tk 5,750 after they went out without wearing masks.

Executive magistrates Md Shihabul Arif and Md Ashraful Kabir led the drives in old bus stand and in front of Munshiganj General Hospital, reports a correspondent from Munshiganj.

The drives were conducted to ensure wearing masks to prevent the second wave of coronavirus infection, said executive magistrate Shihabul Arif.

During the drives, the courts also distributed masks among many people and requested them not to leave home without masks, he added. 

In Khulna, mobile courts handed fines totalling Tk 23,650 to 64 people and detained 33 for not wearing masks.

Talking to our Khulna correspondent, Yusuf Ali, additional district magistrate, said during the drive, mobile courts detained 33 people in Khulna district and of them 10 are in Khulna city and the rest are from nine upazilas.

"We also fined 64 people Tk 23,650," said the additional district magistrate.

The detained 33 people will be released tomorrow after they give an undertaking, he added.

According to the decision of Khulna district law and order committee meeting, people who do not wear masks will be punished.

Khulna Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Helal Hossain presided over the meeting where the decision was taken on Sunday.
