‘Robber’ killed in Brahmanbaria 'gunfight'

A member of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a “gunfight” in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria early today.

Deceased Saddam Hossain, 26, son of Kangal Mia of Kalikachha Beparipara in Sarail upazila of the district, is accused in a number of cases filed with different police stations, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent quoting police.

Confirming the “gunfight”, Officer-in-charge of Ashuganj Police Station Jabed Mahmud said a police team constituted with Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station and Detective Branch of police (DB) surrounded Jatrapur Chaporbari area around 1:15am.

Sensing presence of police, the suspected robbers opened fire targeting the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered “a gunfight”.

Saddam came in the line of fire and died on the spot, the OC said.

Police captured three of the gang members -- Akash Mia, 27, of Birasar area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, Hridoy Miah, 25, Nathpara area of Sarail upazila and Ashraful Islam, 25, of Uchaliapara area of Sarail upazila.

Four policemen were also injured during the incident, the police official said.

Police seized a CNG-run auto rickshaw, a motorcycle and a pistol used by the robbers from the spot.
