Heavily armed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troopers have been deployed at St Martin’s Island for ensuring overall security of the Island.

This “heavily armed” deployment comes under a government directive, a press release issued from BGB headquarters today said without specifying further.

It comes amid the ongoing high-level border trooper talks between Bangladesh and Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar, which will end on April 10.

The paramilitary forces had been deployed on the island till 1997, the release said.

Mohsin Reza, public relations officer of the BGB, termed the deployment a government directive – echoing the official statement issued in this regard.

“No abnormal situation has arisen,” he told The Daily Star this evening.
