Australia today alerted its nationals over possible security threat in Dhaka – possibly in connection with New Year celebrations.

“The level of advice has not changed. You should exercise a high degree of caution in Bangladesh,” the travel advisory of the Australian government reads.

The updated travel advisory mentioned that the US government has warned of possible attacks on hotels and clubs in Dhaka.

It said Australians should exercise particular caution when visiting public places, including bars, hotels and events and locations frequented by foreigners, during the holiday period between Christmas and New Year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have already announced increased security measures for December 31, including prohibiting outdoor parties in Dhaka after 8:00pm.

There will be increased checkpoints in the areas of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and the University of Dhaka.
