A Supreme Court (SC) lawyer today appealed to the president and prime minister to pardon the jail sentence of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and release her from jail on humanitarian ground ahead of birth centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Advocate Eunus Ali Akond sent applications to President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, requesting them to pardon Khaleda Zia's jail sentence and release her from jail -- saying that Khaleda is gravely ill.

As per the preamble of the constitution and its articles 11, 48 (3) and 49, the president can pardon the jail sentence on any convict.

Eunuds Ali Akond told The Daily Star that he sent the applications to president and prime minister by post today.
