2 schoolgirls killed in Cumilla road crashes

Two schoolgirls were killed in separate road crashes in Sadar Dakkhin and Chandina upazilas of Cumilla today.

The deceased were identified as Rina Saha Riya, 15, daughter of Labu Shaha of Baropara in Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin and Mahmuda Akter Yasmin, 14, daughter of Monir Hossain in Chandina upazila’s Nazirpur area.

Rina, a class X student of Bijoypur High School, died on the spot when a human hauler carrying students fell into a roadside ditch at Bijoypur in Sadar Dakkhin upazila around 9:15am, reports our Cumilla correspondent.

Five other students were also injured when the accident took place.

Soon after the accident, students of Bijoypur High School put barricade on a road in front of their school and staged demonstration, the correspondent said.

Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin Police Station, said, "The situation is now under control. The injured victims have been admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital”.     

In another incident, Yasmin, a class nine student at Kutumbopur High School, was killed as a truck ran over her at Kutumbopur in Chandina upazila around 9:00am.

The accident took place on Dhaka-Chattogram highway when she was returning to home after attending a programme marking the Independence Day today, said Chnadina Police Station OC Abu Faisal.

Protesting the incident, the victim’s fellow students blocked the road. Later the law enforcers brought the situation under control, the OC said.
