Death in ‘police custody’: 3 police constables give depositions

Body formed to find whether anyone helped the accused flee

Three policemen today gave depositions before a court in a case filed over death of Rayhan Ahmed, who died after allegedly being tortured inside Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet city on October 11.

Judge of Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Court Md Ziadur Rahman recorded the depositions of constables Delwar, Saidur and Shamim, who were working at the outpost, under Section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code this afternoon, said PBI Inspector Mahidul Islam, investigation officer of the case.

Meanwhile, police headquarters has formed a three-member committee to find out whether anyone helped Sub-Inspector Akber Hossain flee.

Akber has been on the run since the death of Rayhan Ahmed. The committee, headed by an assistant inspector general of police, has been directed to submit its report within five working days, Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of PHQ, told The Daily Star.

Earlier on October 15, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) warned all immigration points of the country to be on a lookout for SI Akber Hossain, who is on the run since October 12.

Raihan (34) was allegedly tortured to death in Sylhet city's Bandarbazar police outpost on October 11. Later, he died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
