Met Gala 2023: Stars celebrate Karl Lagerfeld

The red carpet for the 2023 Met Gala took place yesterday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year's event honours the exhibition "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."

The evening will remember Lagerfeld's legacy and raise funding for the Met's Costume Institute. Lagerfeld was the late designer who oversaw fashion brands such as Chanel, Fendi, and his own namesake line.

Jared Leto took the Choupette inspiration quite literally in a full cat costume

Actor Jared Leto arrived at the Met Gala dressed as Choupette, Lagerfeld's beloved fluffy cat. In another homage to the famous feline, American rapper and singer Doja Cat wore a prosthetic cat nose and a hooded Oscar de la Renta gown fitted with cat ears.

Rihanna and her Valentino couture had the carpet to themselves, save for her partner, A$AP Rocky, who donned a red tartan skirt over crystal-studded trousers, in the spirit of Lagerfeld himself.

Many of the outfits featured boucle fabric (Teyana Taylor's Thom Browne suit and Anne Hathaway's Versace safety pin number for example). Emily Blunt wore a Michael Kors blouse with camellias, as did Adut Akech in a Carolina Herrera outfit.

Nicole Kidman opted for a dress that Karl Lagerfeld personally created for her 20 years ago, and Dua Lipa walked the runway wearing a white Chanel ballgown from the fashion house's archives.

Anne Hathaway's embellished tweed dress with safety pin details featured a long train, matching jacket and arm bands

And there were some surprises: Serena Williams announced her pregnancy with her second child, while dressed in a flapper Gucci look.

Gigi Hadid wore corseted Givenchy gown

Gigi Hadid wore Givenchy in black with feathers, a drop waist, and a sheer train in tulle. It took over 300 hours to complete the dress. Kendall Jenner was likewise dressed in black. She was dressed in a glittery leotard with long sleeves and sections that doubled as a train.

The invitation-only gala earned USD 17.4 million last year for the museum's Costume Institute, a self-funding department with a budget dependent on the gala's success. The price of attending went up this year to USD 300,000 for a table and USD 50,000 for a single ticket.
