Many low-lying areas of Chattogram city went under knee-deep water due to rain, causing sufferings to commuters and residents today (June 17, 2022).

The Chattogram Met Office recorded 40.8 mm rain in the past 24 hours till 3:00 pm today, said Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, met officer. "As the monsoon wave is active in the area, rain would be continued for the next 24 hours," he added.

Meanwhile, waterlogging occurred in many low-lying areas including Bakalia, Agrabad, Kapasgola, Changdgaon, Halishahar and Bahaddarhat due to nonstop rain.

Rainwater entered the ground floor of Chattogram Ma, Shishu and General Hospital – spelling troubles for patients and attendants.

Motorised vehicles stopped plying in the areas that went under water while very few rickshaws were seen on the roads.

Manisha Ghosh, a resident at West Bakalia KB Aman Ali Road area, said water entered their house damaging valuables. "Whenever it rains, water enters our house," she said.

"We have been facing the problem every monsoon for over a decade but the situation is not improved," she added.

Abdul Motaleb, another resident in the area, said all the drains in the area have been blocked by the polythene waste but the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) conservancy workers do not come to clean those regularly.

"The workers do not come to collect the domestic wastes everyday in the area," he said, adding that, "People are compelled to throw those on the road that go into the roadside drains whenever it rains making the drains blocked."

CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury did not receive calls despite repeated attempts for his comment.
