The High Court today directed the government to evict all illegal structures on the bank of river Padma and fences built for fishing in the river between Madaripur and Munshiganj in 30 days.

The court also asked the authorities concerned of the government to submit a report before it by December 13 after complying with the order.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Rezaul-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the order while hearing a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer, Kamruzzaman Kochi.

He submitted the petition this month saying that illegal structures were reportedly built on the bank of Padma and illegal fences were also set up in the river for fishing.

And therefore the environment and water flow of the river are damaged, Kochi said.

He prayed to the court to direct the government to remove the structures and fences from the river and its bank and to take action against those responsible for building illegal structures and fences, petitioner’s counsel ABM Altaf Hossain told The Daily Star.
