The second unit of the 1,320MW coal-fired Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Bagerhat's Rampal has been synchronised with the national grid today.

The synchronisation was completed at 8:51am, Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) spokesperson Shameem Hasan told The Daily Star.

This means the national grid will now get electricity from the second unit on trial basis and later on regularly.

Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd, a 50-50 joint venture between India's National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd and the PDB, operates the plant.

The first unit of the plant was jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on September 6 last year.
