Covid-19 entering endemic stage in India

Cases likely to start subsiding after 10-12 days

Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in India are expected to rise for the next 10-12 days, and will gradually come down, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

The report also underlined that the diseases is heading towards an endemic stage.

India recorded 7,830 new Coronavirus cases today, marking a sharp jump from yesterday when 5675 cases were reported, according to the data shared by the Health Ministry.

"Covid in India is moving towards the endemic stage, so the cases may keep rising for the next 10-12 days after which they will subside," PTI quoted the sources as saying.

Endemic is a stage where cases occur regularly in certain regions. When a disease becomes endemic, the number of people falling ill remains relatively constant over time.

The sources said even though the cases are increasing, hospitalisation in the current phase is low and expected to remain so.

According to the sources, the current surge in Covid cases is being driven by XBB.1.16 which is a sub-variant of Omicron.

While Omicron and its sub-lineages continue to be the dominant variant, most of the variants have little or no significant transmissibility, disease severity or immune escape.

The prevalence of XBB.1.16 increased from 21.6 per cent in February this year to 35.8 per cent in March.
