Photo Feature The Charm of Barisal City Photos by Amirul Rajiv Barisal city, an old port on the Kirtankhola on the northern shore of the Bay of Bengal in southern Bangladesh, has grown into an important bustling centre of economic activity. With nearly 0.38 million people living there, Barisal city also boasts several renowned educational institutions, medical college, cadet college, pharmaceutical industries, textile industries and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority's head office. The country's first short landing and take off airport has been completed in Barisal. Despite being a fast-growing city, it has managed to retain much of its old charm. The quaint BRTA river boat from colonial times, the gorgeous greenness surrounding rivers and streams and the ancient trees that stand witness to the great changes in this city -all contribute to the cohabitation of antiquity and progress.
