Rohingya killed, 4 others injured as mortar shells fired from Myanmar explode

A Rohingya youth was killed and four others were injured in mortar shells blast fired from Myanmar in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban today (September 16, 2022).

The incident took place around 8:30pm tonight at No Man's Land in Konarpara on the Tumbru border of Ghumdhum union in the upazila, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent quoting Ashoke Kumar Pal, additional superintendent of police in Bandarban.

He said mortar shells went off at No Man's Land in Konarpara on the Tumbru border of Ghumdhum union in the upazila, leaving one Rohingya youth Iqbal Hossain Bari (18) dead and four others injured.

Iqbal succumbed to his injuries upon his arrival at the hospital, he added.

According to locals, five mortar shells from Myanmar were fired into the territory of Bangladesh. Of them, three exploded.

According to locals and MSF hospital sources, the victims were brought to MSF Hospital at Kutupalong in Ukhia around 9:30pm with serious injuries.

Yasmin Parvin Tibrizi, deputy commissioner of Bandarban district told The Daily Star that they have asked the concerned authorities to shift the Ghumdhum examination centre for the examinees of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) to Ukhiya Kutupalong Centre in Cox's Bazar due to the border situation.
