5 killed as covered van ploughs into restaurant

At least five people were killed as a covered van veered into a roadside restaurant in Jashore's Manirampur upazila this morning.

The accident took place around 7:30am in Bagaritola area after the driver of the covered van lost control of the vehicle, Sheikh Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station, told The Daily Star.

All five victims, who were having breakfast at the restaurant, died on the spot, the OC said.

The deceased were identified as Habibur Rahman, 45, his son Tausi Hossain, 7, Ziarul Islam, 35, Touhidur Rahman, 38, and Mir Shamsul, 60, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting Bhojgati Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Razzaq.

Police seized the covered van but its driver managed to flee.
