Panchagarh boat capsize: Death toll rises to 50 as 9 more bodies recovered

Death toll from the boat capsize in Karatoa river in Panchagarh rose to 50 with the recovery of 26 more bodies from the river today (September 26, 2022).

Of the 26 bodies, 17 were recovered this morning and the other nine were recovered this evening, our Thakurgaon correspondent reports quoting Dipankar Roy, additional deputy commissioner of Panchagarh, also the head of rescue operation control room.

Twenty-four bodies were recovered yesterday following the capsize, the additional deputy commissioner said.

Dipankar Roy also said, "Yesterday, a list of 65 missing people was prepared based on information given by their relatives and of them, 26 bodies were found today," he said.

The engine-run trawler packed with over a hundred passengers capsized around 1:30pm at Awalia Ghat in Madea union of Boda upazila, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boda Police Station Sujoy Kumar Roy said the boat was on its way to Bodeshwari temple in Barashashi union when the accident occurred.

The DC yesterday told The Daily Star that at least 70-80 people were rescued alive following the incident.
