Pedestrian dies after covered van overturns and crushes him

A pedestrian was killed when he was crushed by a covered van which fell on him after colliding with a bus in Dhaka's Jatrabari this morning.

The dead, Jahid Mollah, 37, was a house painter by profession.

Sub-inspector Osman Ali of Jatrabari Police Station said the accident took place around 7:00am at Golapbagh intersection when the driver of the covered van lost control of the steering and the vehicle hit a Shyamoli Paribahan bus.

On impact, it toppled on its side, falling on Jahid who was walking along the road, killing him instantly, the SI said.

Locals took out the body from under the van. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police seized both the covered van and bus after the incident, the SI said.

The driver of the covered van fled the scene, he added.

Hailing from Madaripur district, Jahid used to work as a house painter in Chattogram. He arrived in Dhaka from the port city in the morning and was supposed to go to his village home, his cousin Sihab Mollah said.
