Road accidents kill 5 in 3 districts

Five people were killed in separate road accidents in Tangail, Savar and Barguna today.

In Tangail, two motorcyclists, including a bank official, were killed when a speeding bus ran over them on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Basail upazila this evening.

The deceased were identified as Abul Hossan, 55, an official of Krishi Bank of Delduar branch and Rezaul Karim, 32, of Nagarpur upazila, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Quoting witnesses, Molla Tutul, officer-in-charge of Gogai Highway Police Station, said a North Bengal-bound bus of SI Paribahan hit the motorcycle when it made a U-turn on the highway at Karatipara Bypass on the way to Karatia from Delduar at about 7:00pm, leaving the two motorcyclists dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Tangail General Hospital for autopsy, said the OC.

However, the bus driver and the helper fled the scene, the police official added.

In Dhamrai, a motorcyclist was killed when his bike collided head-on with a pick-up van at about 6:00 pm on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Kalampur area.

The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam, 25, of Kathalia in Kushura union under Dhamrai upazila.

Jahangir was a health worker at Brac, his uncle Anis-ur-Rahman said, adding that Jahangir was returning home in Kathalia from Dhamrai when the collision happened.

Masud Khan, OC of Golra Highway Police Station, said the body has been kept in the custody of police and it will be handed over to the family after completing all due process.

In Barguna, two brothers were killed in a road accident at Kewabunya area on the Patuakhali-Kuakata highway this evening.

The deceased were identified as Noor Alam Akon, 30, and his younger brother Abdullah Akon, 25, reports our Patuakhali correspondent quoting AKM Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Amtali Police Station.

Quoting locals and eyewitnesses, the OC said the two brothers were returning home from work in their rickshaw-van.

When they reached Kewabunya area around 7:00pm, a Dhaka-bound bus of Romer Paribahan hit their van, leaving them dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies and brought them to the police station, said the OC, adding that the bus has been seized, however, the driver and the helper managed to flee.

Efforts are underway to nab them, added the OC.
