Two crashes claim 11 lives

At least six people were killed in a bus-microbus collision in Barishal and five people died after a train rammed a three-wheeler in Gopalganj yesterday.   

Six people were killed and seven others injured as a bus and a microbus collided head-on in Barishal's Uzirpur upazila.

The dead, all owners of small businesses in Gazipur, were passengers of the microbus. They were travelling to Kuakata after visiting the Padma Bridge.

Of them, Hasan Sarkar, 36, Ruhul Amin, 42, Nurul Islam Thandu, 54, and Abdur Rahman, 45, died on the spot. Shahidul Islam, 43, died on the way to the hospital and Harun R Rashid Badshah, 40, died while undergoing treatment, said Momin Uddin, officer-in-charge of Uzirpur Police Station.

The injured, who too were microbus passengers, were rushed to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. Two of them, Moksed, 54, and the driver, Asor Uddin, are in a critical condition.

According to eyewitnesses, the microbus collided with the bus on Dhaka-Barishal highway after one of its tyres burst.

Following the accident, the police seized the bus, but the driver and his helper managed to flee.

In a similar accident the day before, six people were killed in Barishal's Bakerganj where a BRTC bus rammed an auto-rickshaw.

In Gopalganj's Kashiani upazila, five people were killed and one injured when Tungipara Express hit a three-wheeler at a level crossing around 9:20pm.

Sujon Mridha, 35, Amrita Biswas, 30, Poritos Das, 34, Hiramon Biswas, 45, and Mohammad Reza, 41, of Laxmipur village in Kashiani upazila, died on the spot, said Shofikul Islam, chairman of Parulia Union Parishad.

All of them were passengers of the three-wheeler, he added.

The workers were returning from work, said Masud Rana, officer-in-charge of Rajbari Railway Police Station.

The injured was rushed to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, he added.
