Trishal accident: Man driving truck without license for 6 years, Rab says

The driver of the truck, which hit and killed three persons including a pregnant woman in Mymensingh's Trishal, did not have valid license to drive heavy vehicles.

Even the tax token and fitness certificate of the vehicle had expired.

Khandaker Al Moin, Rab's legal and media wing director, said this today, a day after arresting the truck driver Raju Ahmed Shipon (42) from Dhaka's Savar yesterday (July 18, 2022).

"The driver previously had a license for driving medium sized vehicles but he lost it in 2016… He has been driving the truck without license since 2016," he said.

The Rab official said the truck was carrying 13.5 tonnes of weight during the accident, against its capacity of 7 tonnes.

The driver told Rab that the accident happened as he attempted to give space to a bus and did not notice the three people.

Earlier in 2002, Raju met with an accident and sustained injuries in his left leg while working as a helper of a truck driver in Jashore.

Despite enduring problems caused by the leg injury, he has been driving a truck at regular intervals for the last 10 years, the Rab official said.

In a tragic event that unfolded in Trishal area, an eight-months-pregnant woman gave birth to a baby girl on July 16, before succumbing to her injuries after a truck ran her over while she was crossing a road.

Two others – the woman's husband and daughter – were also dead in the accident.

The newborn, however, survived miraculously.
