1 arrested over rape attempt in Lalmonirhat

A man was arrested today (July 2) for allegedly attempting to rape a housewife in a village on Dharla River basin under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.

The arrestee Minazul Islam (42) is a resident of the village, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting police.

Minazul was arrested in a case filed by the victim in this connection, said Shaha Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.

The incident happened yesterday night when the victim was staying alone at her under-construction home in the village. Her husband was guarding their cattle on their old homestead which got damaged on June 29 in erosion of Dharla River, the OC said.

Finding her alone in the house with doors and windows not installed yet, Minazul entered the house at dawn on Saturday (July 2) and tried to forcibly rape the woman. As she screamed for help, villagers rushed to the spot and rescued her, and tried to nab Minazul but he managed to flee, the police official said citing case statement.

Later, the local Union Parishad chairman and members were informed in this regard and they nabbed the accused at noon today with help of village police, before handing him over to Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, the OC also said.

The accused will be produced before a Lalmonirhat court tomorrow showing him arrested in the case, he added.

There were several similar allegations against the accused, Minajul, said Jonab Ali, a local UP member.
