10 injured as BNP, police clash in Tangail

At least 10 people, including policemen, were hurt in a clash between law enforcers and local BNP leaders in Baghil area of Dhanbari, Tangail, yesterday.

Police fired 17 empty shells and used three tear gas shells to take control of the situation, officials said.

Locals said Dhanbari Upazila BNP was holding its council around 5:00pm when a group of party leaders and activists went to Madhupur-Dhanbari road and began a protest against the council.

When a team from Dhanbari Police Station went to the spot and asked the BNP men to leave the area, the law enforcers and the protesters engaged in a clash, locals said.

Sarkar Shaheed, former general secretary of Madhupur Upazila BNP, said three BNP men got shot and two others were injured in the incident.

Chand Miah, officer-in-charge of Dhanbari Police Station, told The Daily Star that police fired blank shots in self defence when the BNP men attacked them.

Five policemen were injured in the incident, he added.
