A Cox's Bazar court today sentenced 101 yaba peddlers to a year and a half in jail and fined them Tk 20,000 each in a drugs case.

All of the yaba peddlers, who surrendered in the district nearly four years ago, were acquitted from the arms case.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Mohammad Ismail of Cox's Bazar Senior District and Sessions Court, Faridul Alam, Cox's Bazar district public prosecutor, told The Daily Star.

The final arguments were presented in the last hearing on November 15.

At least 102 yaba peddlers surrendered to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Teknaf Pilot High School premises in the district on February 16, 2019, with three lakh pieces of yaba, 30 locally made firearms, and 70 rounds of ammunition.

Arms and drug cases were filed against them with Teknaf Police Station on the same day.

One accused, Mohammad Rassel, 28, died at a hospital on August 7 of the same year during the ongoing trial.
