2 sued for stealing Humayun Ahmed’s paintings

Actor Meher Afroz Shaon, wife of celebrated novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed sued two people yesterday over stealing some of his paintings.

Shaon filed the case against Ruma Chowdhury and book trader Biswajit Saha with the court of Dhaka's Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain yesterday, court sources said.

Taking the case into cognisance, the magistrate recorded the complainant's statement and directed Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case and submit a report before the court by August 29.

According to the case document, Humayun Ahmed -- who passed away in July 2012 -- gave 24 of his paintings to the accused for an exhibition in June 2012, on the condition that they would return the paintings after the exhibition.

In February 2013, the accused returned 20 paintings to the writer's mother in the capital's Pallabi. The four other paintings were stolen by the accused, the complainant said in the case statement.
