Accused in cattle theft case dies during police raid in Ctg

An accused in a cattle theft case died during a raid in Chattogram's Shahid Nagar area early today.

The deceased was identified as Md Nasir Uddin, 55, a resident of Paschim Shahid Nagar area.

Abu Tayeb Md Arif Hossen, additional superintendent of police (DB) of Chattogram District Police, said Nasir is an accused in a cattle theft case filed with Fatickchari Police, which sought the district's detective branch to arrest him.

When a DB team went to Nasir's house, the accused locked the door from inside and was shouting for help.

"Some men then started pelting stones at police. As he was a heart patient, we suspect that he had a cardiac arrest and died inside the house," Arif said.

However, a police source said Nasir escaped from his house breaking the window when police tried to enter.

He jumped into a pond from where police recovered the body. He was later rushed to Chattogram Metropolitan Hospital where he was announced dead, the police sources said preferring anonymity.

Ferdous Zahan, officer-in-charge of Baizid Bostami Police Station, said they found Nasir's body from inside an ambulance.

"I visited Nasir's house and found the window broken. It's not clear how the window was broken. We will investigate the incident," he said.
