Illegal Brick Kilns on Rivers: HC summons Khulna DC, UNO

The High Court yesterday summoned Khulna DC and Dumuria UNO on January 10, 2023, for not complying with its directives of removing illegal brick kilns from Bhadra and Hori rivers.

DC Md Moniruzzaman Talukder and UNO Sharif Ahik Rahman have been ordered to appear before the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo.

The bench issued the order following a contempt of court petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

Petitioner's counsel Manzill Murshid said following the petition, the HC on December 14 last year directed the DC and UNO to demolish 14 illegal kilns within the boundaries of the rivers and submit a compliance report in 60 days.

But satellite image and a newspaper report revealed that most of them are still operating there, he said.

The rights body submitted the petition following a report by The Daily Star on February 12, 2021, titled "Brick Kilns in Khulna's Dumuria: United they kill rivers".
