Journo comes under attack in Patuakhali, 2 held

A local correspondent of the daily Jugantor was injured in an attack allegedly by neighbours in Patuakhali's Galachipa upazila last evening.

Sohag Rahman, 42, also general secretary of Galachipa Press Club and Patuakhali district correspondent of Mohona Television, is receiving treatment at the local upazila health complex, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.

Police picked up his neighbours Maruf Mohammad Ivan, 37, and Tanvir Mohammad Akid, 28 over the incident.

Sohag's colleague Ripon Biswas, who witnessed the incident, said Maruf swooped on Sohag, who was having a chat with him and two of his colleagues at a tea stall in front of the post office around 7:30pm yesterday.

Maruf's younger brother Tanvir also joined in and beat up Sohag, Ripon said, adding that Sohag's suffered injuries in his face and left eye.

Quoting the victim's family members, Sonit Kumar Gayen, officer-in-charge of Galachipa Police Station, said Sohag had a dispute with his neighbour Monir, who is very close to Tanvir and Maruf.

Sohag's family suspect that Monir asked Tanvir and Maruf to carry out the attack, the OC said. "The attackers are being questioned. However, no complaint has been lodged so far. Action will be taken once a complaint is filed," the police official added.
