Lalmonirhat mob killing: Imam arrested

Detectives arrested an imam for his alleged involvement in the brutal killing of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel in Lalmonirhat.

Shariful Islam (40) was arrested from Patgram Upazila Sadar last night, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports, quoting the investigating officer of the case and district DB Police Inspector Abu Hasan Kabir.

The DB official told The Daily Star that Shariful has been shown arrested in the murder case.

Hailing from Paschim Bhelabari village in Lalmonirhat's Aditmari upazila, Shariful is the imam of Dhabalsuti mosque in Patgram.

According to DB police sources, police have so far arrested 49 people in three cases filed over the murder.

Earlier, Sramik League president of Burimari union unit Abul Hossain alias Hossain Decorator, the main accused in the murder case, mosque khadem Jobed Ali and four others have given confessional statements at a court.

Jewel was beaten up and burnt to death by a mob in Burimari area of Patagram upazila on October 29.
