Panic gripped people in some areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts following rumours of robbery incidents last night.

Police conducted drives in 30 areas of Sylhet city, Sylhet Sadar upazila and Sunamganj Sadar upazila but did not find evidence of any robbery incident, said Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Azbahar Ali Sheikh.

He said, "We raided at least 30 places last night (June 18, 2022). Police patrolled the areas all night. There was no robbery anywhere. It's all rumour."

People could not sleep the whole night and came out on the streets with sticks when an announcement of robbery was made through miking from the mosques, our Sylhet correspondent reports.

All parts of Sylhet, including the city, had been experiencing power outage since yesterday (June 18, 2022) afternoon. In the evening, power supply was restored in Sylhet city but other parts remained without electricity. Since Thursday, Sunamganj district has been experiencing power outage.

Kausar Alam of Tukerbazar area of Sylhet Sadar, said that they were told to be on alert as announcement of robbery was made from the mosques. Police also visited the areas but there was no robbery incident.
