The Supreme Court chamber judge today stayed till March 6 a High Court order that sought a list of Bangladeshi migrant workers who died or got injured while constructing hotels and stadiums in Qatar between 2010 and 2022 in preparation for last year's FIFA World Cup.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, passed the order following a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on the HC order.

Deputy Attorney General Samarendranath Biswas, who appeared for the government during the hearing of the petition, told The Daily Star that the government will move a leave to appeal petition before the Appellate Division after receiving the copy of the HC order.

The HC on Monday, asked the ministries of foreign affairs and expatriates' welfare to prepare the list of Bangladeshi migrant workers who died or got injured while constructing hotels and stadiums in Qatar between 2010 and 2022 in preparation for last year's FIFA World Cup, mentioning names of the workers, and submit it before the court.

The court also issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why they should not be directed to give adequate compensation to the workers' families.

The HC issued the order and rule following the petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Masood R Sobhan.

He submitted the petition in December last year, saying that at least 450 Bangladeshi migrant workers reportedly died.
