Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said that stopping Gaibandha-5 by-polls was not a "reckless" decision.

The Election Commission had taken the decision thoughtfully, the CEC said at a press conference held at the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital's Agargaon this afternoon (October 13, 2022).

The election was halted after closely monitoring the situation, he said.

The CEC said a three-member probe committee has already been formed. The committee has been asked to investigate the irregularities and submit a report within the next seven days, he said.

After receiving the report, necessary decision will be taken regarding the election of Gaibandha-5 constituency.

The Election Commission yesterday (October 13, 2022) stopped the Gaibandha-5 by-polls, saying the situation went "out of control" due to widespread electoral irregularities.
